Important Notice for Parents of Children on ADHD Meds

Certain ADHD medications are currently facing significant shortages. As summer draws to a close, we anticipate an increase in inquiries from parents experiencing difficulties in locating their child's ADHD medication.

If your family takes a break from medication during the summer, we recommend starting your search now to ensure you can secure the necessary prescriptions in time for the new school year.

Medication Shortages

Certain ADHD medications are currently facing significant shortages. Here are some of the most challenging medications to find:

  • Focalin (Dexmethylphenidate): Extremely difficult to locate
  • Vyvanse (both brand and generic): Very hard to find and can be quite costly
  • Methylphenidate: Availability can vary based on the dosage

Additionally, the FDA has reported shortages of the following medications:

  • Amphetamine Aspartate Monohydrate
  • Amphetamine Sulfate
  • Dextroamphetamine Saccharate
  • Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Tablet
  • Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate Capsule and Tablet (Chewable)
  • Methamphetamine Hydrochloride Tablet
  • Methylphenidate Hydrochloride Tablet, Extended Release

Pharmacy Challenges

Some pharmacies, such as Walmart Pharmacy, may not provide stock information directly to patients, only to medical professionals. Express Scripts will only confirm availability if the prescription has already been submitted to them.

Recommendations

To help manage these shortages, the American Academy of Pediatrics offers guidance and recommendations, which you can find here: AAP ADHD Medication Shortage Guidance.

We encourage you to start looking for your child’s medication early and to contact your pharmacy or healthcare provider for assistance. If you have any questions or need support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued trust in our care.
