What are intellectual and/or developmental disorders?

Sometimes referred to as neurodevelopmental disorders, they are disabilities associated primarily with the functioning of the neurological system and brain. Examples of neurodevelopmental disorders in children include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities, intellectual disability (also known as mental retardation), conduct disorders, cerebral palsy, and impairments in vision and hearing.

What to do if you have concerns about your child’s development....

Contact us! While your child’s development is being screened at every well visit, we understand concerns may arise between visits. JDC staff can help get you moving in the right direction. This may mean a visit with your child’s primary care provider to discuss your questions/concerns or a referral to a specialist for further evaluation and a formal diagnosis. This step is important because it will inform your child’s future medical care. It also helps pave the way for any future services your child may need in order to thrive. Treatment will depend on your child’s individual needs and diagnosis. This often includes services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

  • If your child is under the age of 3, Early Intervention is an excellent resource for families (see Disability Resources below)
  • Children older than 3 can receive evaluations through the Capital Area Intermediate Unit (see Disability Resources below)
  • School age children can often obtain evaluation through their district
  • Private evaluations through insurance are an option as well

If your child already has a diagnosis and you are looking for services and/or resources, go to More Disability Resources on this website for additional support options.
