JDC is currently accepting newborns into the practice. However, so that we can continue to offer our existing patients the care and attention that they deserve, JDC is no longer accepting families with existing children who wish to transfer their care from another practice. This will remain in effect until further notice.
Text4baby is a free* health information service delivered on your mobile phone, to help keep you and your baby healthy. Does your child always seem to have some kind of form or another to be completed? He may or may not need to be seen, depending on the type of form. Click here to find out what you will need to do.
The flu vaccine for the 2017-18 flu season is now available at JDC Pediatrics. We recommend that all children ages 6 months through 18 years receive this vaccine. Please call our office to schedule an appointment. Click here for more info on the flu vaccine.
The American Accademy of Pediatrics (AAP) is advising parents to stop giving fruit juice to children in the first year of life, saying the drink is not as healthful as many parents think. Click here for more info and age-group recommendations for fruit juice.
Previously the HPV vaccine was given as a 3-dose series for all eligible-aged children. Now only 2 doses are recommended for children age 9 through 14, with the doses separated by at least 6 months. Children who begin HPV vaccination at 15 years of age and older will still need 3 doses. We will send a reminder call to you when your child is due for their next dose.

Well Child Visits

Good health care for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents begins with the well-child visit (check-up) and other services that help keep children healthy. These are preventive services. Our doctors and staff provide these services based on a plan called Bright Futures. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) made this plan to help doctors and families know what preventive services children should receive from birth to 18 years of age, such as screening tests, and advice about staying healthy and safe. This plan can be altered to suit each child as needed. We also follow the AAP vaccine schedule for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents.
Because preventative services are important to keeping children healthy, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (health care reform law) includes a rule that all preventive care screening and services included in the Bright Futures plan and vaccine schedule must be covered by most health plans. This is not always true, though, as some older plans, called grandfathered plans, do not have to pay in full for preventive services.
To schedule a well child visit for ages 2-18, we recommend that you call 3 months in advance so you may choose the date, time and physician that best fit your needs. Children under age 2 are scheduled when in the office at check-out.
During a well child visit, you can expect:

  • Evaluation of growth and development
  • Discussion of safety, nutrition, fitness, behavior, school, relationships with peers, day to day family life, etc.
  • A physical examination
  • A chance to ask questions
  • Developmental screenings, if appropriate
  • Age-appropriate medical screening tests (including hearing*, vision*, hemoglobin, etc.)
  • Age appropriate immunizations

Hearing and vision exams are recommended by the AAP at certain check-ups (** indicates hearing and vision, * indicates vision only) and we do perform them. There is a separate charge for each exam. Please contact your health insurance company for information on coverage for these services. The procedure codes are: hearing 92551; vision 99173.

There may also be times when a child needs a service that is not considered preventive on the same day as a well-child visit. If a child is not well or a problem is found or needs to be addressed during the check-up, the physician may need to provide an additional office visit service (called a sick visit) to care for the child. This is a different service and is billed to your health plan in addition to the preventive services provided on that day. Certain circumstances may require you to schedule a separate appointment for these types of issues. If you have a co-payment for office visits, it must be paid at the time of service. Any coinsurances or deductibles must be paid upon receipt of the first statement. Some services that may be provided and billed in addition to preventive services include:

  • The doctor’s work to address more than a minor problem, which will be billed as an office visit (e.g., if the doctor gives a prescription, orders tests, or changes care for a known problem)
  • Medical treatments (e.g., breathing treatments or wart treatments)
  • Any surgery (e.g., removing splinters or something the child put in his ear or nose)
  • Tests performed in the office that are not included in the Bright Futures plan

Our office does not want you to be surprised by a bill but must always bill your health plan based on the actual services provided. Please feel free to ask questions about services that may not be paid in full by your health plan on the day of your visit.
